Access Helpful Resources
There are a number of resources available to assist to address firefighter behavioral needs, including posttraumatic stress (PTSD), depression, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, alcohol use problems and family stress. There is no “one size fits all.” The type of resource that is best for an individual can vary based on their experiences, needs, and goals.
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals.
Center for Firefighter Behavioral Health
Since 2011, our team at the Center for Firefighter Behavioral Health (CFFBH) has received funding from Department of Homeland Security via the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) to develop several free and confidential online resources and tools to address firefighter behavioral needs, including posttraumatic stress, depression, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, alcohol use problems and family stress. These resources have proved successful in helping firefighters to help themselves and their peers, for families to learn strategies for managing stress, and in preparing clinicians to provide best-practice interventions.
IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery
The IAFF Center of Excellence developed this resource to deliver high quality services for behavioral wellness which covers a variety of treatments relevant to fire service, including management of health risk behaviors, substance abuse treatment, treatments designed to target posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety, suicide prevention, and services to promote the well-being of families. The Center of Excellent will assist in connecting with local mental health professionals as well as teletherapy.
